Why is it that so many people still feel the need to cover up what all they have had done?! I’ll never quite understand.. You’re 25 years old and were a negative A cup last month (and the 25 years before that – trust me girl, I’m right there with you..) and today you’re a perky C cup.. Who cares?! Pretty positive your puberty years are long gone and that ain’t no change in hormones 😛 If you got it, (aka you were born with it or you literally went to a doctor and GOT IT..) FLAUNT IT! — And that’s exactly what I’m here to do! FLAUNT my new botox’d forehead and nonexistent crows-feet and openly wonder why I didn’t get botox 10 years earlier?! ..okay maybe not a whole 10 years 😉
So yall know me and my obsessive tendencies. I’ve researched lightbulbs for 3 days to make sure I’ve found the best deal..
Can you imagine how long I researched botox and the person I would eventually allow to inject me with it?
Let’s just say a SCARY amount of time.. but before we get to the goods, let’s talk about what Botox really is.. and before we do that, let me go ahead and put out there that I am not in the medical profession in any way, shape or form. I do not intend for people to use this PERSONAL BLOG POST of mine for any type of treatment. I do not claim to be an expert in Botox. The information here has been found from reputable medical sources. .. How sad is it that a statement like that is even necessary? Lord help us all.. 😛
ANYWAY. Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is produced by the naturally occurring Clostridium Botulinum – aka a bacteria. (“What?! I know this bitch didn’t just say bacteria?!” – Sure did. I mean after all, yall know I live as holistically as possible.. did yall really think I would inject some sort of plastic or something crazy in my face?! HA. We all know better than that 😛 ) The Clostridium Botulinum bacteria is transformed into a purified protein that your body processes naturally. It then blocks nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. So when Botulinum Toxin, or Botox, is injected into a muscle, it temporarily weakens or paralyzes the facial muscles which inevitably smooths or even eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a period of months. So basically.. BEST IDEA EVER. (Random fun fact: Botox has been used since 1987 and is considered so safe that there are over 600 medical conditions that now use it as a type of treatment..)
Ok, so I knew a little about Botox to start but after triple checking there are no plastics involved 😉 I just needed to find the person I would trust to administer this bomb bacteria?! And yall know I trust very few people with my skin.. ESPECIALLY MY FACE. Insert, Shelly Steadman (@yourestybestie). If yall have been following me for a while you know Shelly was actually one of my two educators at Aveda when I went to school to become a Licensed Esthetician. Other than feeling like I found an immediate soul sister, I knew this bitch KNEW HER STUFF. (Ps. Like me, Shelly will read this and find “bitch” as an endearing noun.. #woahchill for people who take life too seriously..)
But all around, my kind of person.
Shelly has been licensed in esthetics for 10 years, she taught esthetics for another 6 and she is freakishly obsessed with ingredients. Again, my kind of person. I mean after all, you don’t have to be a licensed esthetician to be a makeup artist, but I wanted to know the in’s and out’s of skin care so I would know exactly what I was putting on all of my client’s very different faces. Shelly taught me more in 6 months than I learned in 4 years (well..3.5 :P) at a university. Since then, she’s 1 of few people I trust with my skin’s care. I know she’s not up-selling me when she says I need this facial to help rid my skin of sun damage, I know if she says this product is one of the best – it actually is, I know her hands are steady when she’s brushing my jugular with a sterile blade during dermaplaning (see below). So naturally, I asked her where to start in my journey of finding the best Botox administer.
Shelly had a few people in mind but wasn’t in love with anyone in particular. Not a good sign for me. She gave me the names and backgrounds, good and bad, of doctors and nurses around Nashville who administer Botox. Of course I trust Shelly’s opinion but the researcher in me had to do a little extra homework. When I did, I found information and reviews that basically matched exactly what Shelly had said. ((..shocking..)) I even talked to other local Nashville bloggers about who they had used and their experiences…some of them had the right backgrounds but then only “okay” reviews, some had some great reviews but then their background wasn’t exactly up to my standards..
Sorry I’m not sorry that I can’t fully trust your dentist to inject my body with Botox.
I mean, if you love steak you probably wouldn’t ask a vegetarian to cook your ribeye would you? I’m not saying that a vegetarian couldn’t do it and do it well, but could they really bust out a perfect “Pittsburg Medium-Rare?” I just don’t know. And the perfectionist in me NEEDS to know. — If yall follow me and my stories on Instagram you know I always say that a perfectionist can only have services done by a fellow perfectionist, otherwise when you ask to have one more eyebrow hair tweezed or your pinky toe to be repainted after you accidentally grazed it – that person is going to think your 1. Needy and 2. Crazy. Whereas a fellow perfectionist probably wouldn’t even leave a missed hair to be tweezed in the first place or would have their gut wrenched to let you leave the salon with a pinky toe that gave you anxiety. — SO. The hunt continued…
A month or so into my research, Shelly said she’s found THE ONE. Board Certified Physicians Assistant, Elisabeth Smith (you might not know but the heavens actually opened up and a light shined down as I typed that..) Shelly gave me the Elisabeth news but told me to “hang tight” on booking my appointment. So I did and I used that time to start my research and DAMN. — Somehow in the drool worthy time I spent researching Elisabeth, Shelly worked months of magic and convinced Elisabeth to LEAVE her SIX YEAR position as an Oculoplastic Surgery Physicians Assistant (aka – plastic surgery around the eyes..) where she also concentrated in Dermatology, Botox and Fillers to come join Shelly’s Artistry Spa and Salon team. Fast forward and Elisabeth is now up and running her OWN practice The Aesthetic Center at Artistry within Artistry Spa and Salon in Franklin, Tennessee where she offers Botox/Dysport, Filler, Kybella, Chemical Peels and the ultimate medical skin care regimens.
A little bit more about Elisabeth Smith PA-C (@elisabethsmithpa):
Elisabeth’s background AND reviews not only met my perfectionist, OCD, standards but they FAR exceeded them. Elisabeth is board certified by the National Commission, Certification of Physicians Assistants, and is a member of the American Academy of Physicians Assistants. Elisabeth’s undergraduate in Pre-Medicine was done at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee and then she went on to obtain her Masters of Medical Science (with highest honors.. #nbd) at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her academic leadership even led her to be inducted into the extremely prestigious Nu Sigma Upsilon chapter of the Alpha Eta Society..now that’s a mouthful!
Elisabeth also has specialized training in Plastic Surgery and Dermatology as well as non-surgical procedures. She has completed intensive training and studies of facial anatomy and has used this knowledge to train both doctors and nurses in the art of aging. Elisabeth has even had the privilege of continuing her education from International Physicians, keeping her techniques at the cutting edge of where she says her true passion lies, facial evaluation and treatments with non-surgical injectable procedures.
Oh. Okay. WHERE DO I SIGN?!
So now that yall know the (lengthy – sorry #thorough :P) background of how my first experience with botox came about..let me give you a quick rundown of how my first botox treatment actually went down and well..let the pictures do the talking 🙂
Now that Elisabeth is actually at Artisty Salon with Shelly, of course I had to get my face prepped and ready for my facial consultation by the best! Shelly double cleansed my skin, dermaplaned my face and neck to make sure any injection sights would be hair free and have that extra exfoliation, then threw on a Vitamin C Mask. Of course, this is not a necessary step before Botox but yall know me.. #EXTRA and when you’re doing anything to your skin it’s always good to start with a nice, clean base.
After that relaxing service by Shelly, I walked down the hall to meet Elisabeth (even though I felt like I already knew her!) Right off the bat Elisabeth explained that she is an “OCD, perfectionist who takes a conservative injectable approach” (my heart is already happy..) and that with any of her first time clients, people who have had Botox before or not, she always likes to follow up 2 weeks after the first treatment to make sure each client’s customized facial pattern is PERFECT. This is typically a FREE touch up as Elisabeth is taking the time to perfect all areas of each individual clients facial pattern, recording it, answering any questions that might have come up after the client’s initial visit and basically.. just making sure your treatment area is perfect. Wow, okay. And I thought I was #thorough 😛
(FYI. When I went in for my 2 week check up, Elisabeth added 11 more units of Botox to the very top of my forehead…free of charge. – Um. #WINNING!)
But Elisabeth then gave me the FULL rundown. A start to finish facial consultation. She didn’t overlook a single pore much less a wrinkle or fine line. I even threw in Licensed Esthetician curve balls that she took on without the blink of an eye. It was then I knew this would be another person I would add to my VERY small group of people I trust with my skin, face and body. – I had brought a bit of an entourage with me to my first appointment. Julia Perkins (@juliaperkinsphotography), my photographer supplying yall with these awesome photos and Dena, who yall know if you keep up with me and my stories. Even they were throwing out anything that popped in their mind and Elisabeth was so calm, knowledgeable and took us on with the sense of humor you need to take on 3 VERY outspoken, loud, skin-obsessed crazies. We would ask questions and her responses would start with “You know I have to be 100% honest and tell you….you can absolutely have that done but it’s a waste of money and here is why.…the side effects of having that done are….” Dena even asked about having her “Greek nose” filled in at the top between her eyes and Elisabeth without hesitation said, “there are people who do that but I’m not one of them. So far since that area of the face has become a space where physicians are using filler, there have been 19 reported cases of blindness..”
Basically. This woman KNOWS HER STUFF.
And that’s my kind of person.
